What to expect in the emergency room

When you come to the emergency room, our team starts caring for you right away. You may not go straight into a treatment room, but care begins as soon as you arrive.

What happens when you arrive?

When you arrive, you’ll check in and meet with a triage nurse.

The triage nurse will:

  • Ask about your symptoms
  • Check your vital signs
  • Decide how quickly you need care

We treat the most serious conditions first. This means someone who arrives after you may be seen sooner if they need urgent care.

Why do wait times vary?

On busy days, wait times may be longer than expected.

Wait times depend on how many people need care and how serious their conditions are. Some visits take longer because they require more testing or treatment.

We know you may feel uncomfortable or worried. Our team works to keep you informed and as comfortable as possible while you wait.

What happens while you wait?

Even if you are in the waiting room, your care is still in progress.

During this time, we may:

  • Monitor your condition
  • Recheck your vital signs
  • Start tests, like blood work or imaging
  • Begin treatment if needed

If your symptoms change or get worse, tell a staff member right away.

When will I be seen?

You will be taken to a treatment area as soon as one is available and your condition requires it.

Some people are treated and discharged quickly. Others may need more time for testing, treatment, or observation.

What if I need to stay in the hospital?

Some people need to stay in the hospital for ongoing care. If that happens, you may remain in the emergency room until a hospital bed is ready.

While you wait, your care continues. Because the emergency room is part of the hospital, you have access to the care and services you need as we prepare your room.
