What is a CT scan?
A CT scan (computed tomography) uses advanced X-ray technology and computers to create detailed images of the inside of the body. These images help us look closely at bones, organs, and blood vessels.
During the scan, you’ll lie on a table that moves in and out of a large, donut-shaped machine. A radiologist reviews the images and shares results with your care team.
What should you expect during your visit?
CT scans are quick and painless. Most scans take just a few minutes.
Some exams may require contrast to help certain areas show up more clearly. This may include:
- A drink (oral contrast) to highlight your digestive system
- An IV contrast to highlight organs, arteries, and veins
- Your care team will decide if contrast is needed based on your symptoms and medical history.
Do you need to prepare?
Not all CT scans require prep.
If your exam includes oral contrast, you may need to arrive 2 to 3 hours early. You may also be asked not to eat or drink for a short time before your scan.
Bring a list of your current medications. Your care team will give you exact instructions before your visit.
